Certificate Programs

UMA offers training that prepares students for work in the high demand health care fields. Choose from the following programs:

Basic x-ray program

The Basic X-ray Program is designed for individuals looking to provide radiological support to physicians in doctors' offices, medical clinics, and chiropractic centers. You will learn the duties of a Basic X-Ray Technician including the fundamentals of radiological technology, anatomy, medical ethics, patient care, and equipment and safety. We will prepare you to take the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) Basic X-Ray Machine Operator examination. You will also participate in taking live X-rays on patients at local doctors' offices and health care facilities.

Insurance billing and coding specialist

Insurance Billing and Coding Specialists are in high demand at doctors' offices, hospitals and insurance companies. Our program teaches students how to complete, process and maintain the millions of health insurance claims these organizations and their patients file each year. Students learn the coding used to identify and label medical conditions and procedures and how to use medical billing software.

This short term, career-focused program includes study in the classroom and at one of our externship locations. This mix of theory and real-world experience is helpful in today's job market. UMA students graduate with a Certificate of Completion and are qualified to help ensure that doctors and patients are appropriately reimbursed for their medical expenses.

Medical/clinical laboratory assistant program

The Medical/Clinical Laboratory Assistant Program familiarizes students with performance of "waived" laboratory procedures, EKG procedures, blood collection procedures, equipment, collection and handling of specimens, safety and medical ethics, professionalism and anatomy/physiology, including medical terminology and training for Medical Manager, and prepares students for entry-level in-field employment.

Phlebotomy program

The Phlebotomy Program provides training in all the skills required to function as a Phlebotomy Technician in a medical office, clinic, laboratory, or hospital. You will quickly become familiar with blood collection procedures, the utilization of standard phlebotomy equipment, safety and medical ethics, and related medical terminology. The program includes a supervised internship at a local healthcare facility. Upon completion graduates will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be qualified to take the A.M.T. National Phlebotomy examination.

Nursing assistant

Our Nursing Assistant Program is a good fit for individuals who are interested in ensuring the health, comfort and safety of patients. Training includes patient care, anatomy, physiology, medical ethics, equipment, safety and emergency procedures such as CPR. Upon graduation, students will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be prepared to sit for the National Nurse Aid Assessment Program Exam.This program is approved by the State Board of Nursing.

Nursing Assistants are in high demand and our seven-week, career-focused program prepares students to play a critical role in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and assisted-living facilities. Through classes and a hands-on clinical externship, students learn to respond to emergencies and provide day-to-day routine care.

Patient care technician

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are in high demand and students will train to work closely with doctors and nurses in a hospital setting. Students learn phlebotomy and advanced procedures like EKG, along with the day-to-day responsibility of monitoring patients' conditions, updating medical charts and communicating with hospital staff. The program includes real-world experience at an area health care facility.

Training covers primary hospital departments including pediatrics, intensive care, critical care and rehabilitation. The program also includes fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, medical ethics, equipment and safety. Students graduate with a Certificate of Completion and are ready to begin a medical career as a PCT in pre or post-operative care, pediatrics… or even the Emergency Room.

Skin care specialist

Our Skin Care Specialist Program prepares students to work alongside dermatologists, plastic surgeons and other professionals in medical centers, resorts, spas and salons. Students learn techniques that include microdermabrasion, hair removal, peels, masks and makeup application in addition to pre-operative and post-operative care. Clinical externships give students real world experience and help them enter this exciting and growing career field.

UMA students also learn the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, medical ethics, patient care, safety and equipment. Graduates of this career focused program use specialized techniques to help patients improve their appearance and treat skin problems. Successful students will earn a Certificate of Completion.
