The Medical Assistant certificate program of study is designed to
provide students with the knowledge, technical skills, and work
habits required for entry-level positions as Medical Assistants.
The computer technology and word processing facets of the
curriculum enhance the students' potential for placement, and the
medical office administration orientation of the second portion
of the program makes graduates more valuable in the fast-paced
health care offices of today and the future.
This program is broken into two phases, the first phase being the
Certificate in Medical Assistant program, and the second phase
being the medical office administration courses. Prior to
advancing to the medical office administration courses, students
must complete the Certificate in Medical Assistant program.

This curriculum offers an understanding of modern medical
practice, of the requirements for accurate medical records, and
of the significance of medical coding and billing. Importantly,
the program teaches the skills to identify accurately a specific
examination, diagnosis, and/or therapy, as well as the means to
acquire reimbursement.
In pursuit of these objectives, the curriculum includes courses
in:
- Medical terminology
- Human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology
- Healthcare delivery systems
- Coding essentials and procedures
- Medical reimbursement methodologies
- Medical office procedures
- Encoding software
- ICD-9-CM Coding Essentials and Procedures
- CPT Coding Essentials and Procedures
The first three ten-week quarters of the curriculum constitute a
certificate program in Medical Coding and Billing, and is
designed to prepare the student for job readiness. To prepare for
national certification tests, and to satisfy all requirements for
the degree, the student completes the remaining three ten-week
quarters.
