Health Care Courses and Programs

Community Health Care

The Community Health Care diploma program is an intensive program designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in care-giving. You'll learn residential care for clients living with chronic conditions or mental health issues. You'll also study behavior management, non-violent crisis intervention techniques, developmental disorders and basic special education principles. Recreational therapy and activity program planning will also be covered.

As a Community Health Care student, you will also be trained in Standard First Aid and CPR. WHMIS and BC FoodSafe training is also provided. Seven weeks of practicum will allow you to combine theory and practice. You will gain hands-on experience in a three-week practicum in the community and a four-week practicum in a long-term care facility.

As a graduate of the CHC program, you will be prepared to function collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team. Career opportunities include Long-Term Care Aide, Home Support Health Care worker, Resident Care Attendant, Nurse's Aide and Special Needs Assistant.

Medical Office Assistant

In the Medical Office Assistant Program, you will learn basic medical terminology and pharmacology, and be trained to prepare and administer basic medical office tests.

As a student in the Medical Office Assistant program, you will learn to assess and prioritize patient appointment requests. In addition, you will learn general office procedures and administration including the use of medical billing software package. This program maintains the highest possible level of standards and it keeps current with the industry and employers requirements.

Upon graduation, you are prepared to begin a career as an Admitting Clerk, Medical Secretary, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk or Medical Office Assistant.

Medical Pharmacy Assistant

As a result of pharmacists taking a more active role in drug therapy and the counseling of their patients, the pharmacy assistant is becoming an increasingly essential position.

In the Medical Pharmacy Assistant program at Vancouver Career College, you will learn basic medical terminology and pharmacology, dispensing (community and hospital), inventory, billing, bookkeeping and administration, as well as customer service skills. You will be trained to prepare and administer basic medical office tests, learn to assess and prioritize patient appointment requests and respond to patients' basic questions about their medical condition and prescriptions. In addition, you will learn general office procedures and administration including the use of a medical billing software package. You will also receive First Aid and CPR training and certification.

Upon graduation, you are prepared to begin a career as an Admitting Clerk, Emergency Room Admitting Clerk, Medical Secretary, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Clinical Assistant, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk, Pharmacy Assistant Technician or Medical Office Assistant.

As a Pharmacy Assistant / Technician graduate, you will be prepared to step into positions in retail, internet and community pharmacies. Resident Care Attendant

In the Resident Care Attendant program, you will study anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. You will learn about chronic medical conditions, interpersonal relations and communications, as well as human growth and development. You will also gain a solid foundation in specific areas such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia, death and dying, and patient support networks. You will receive certification in First Aid, CPR, BC FoodSafe, and WHMIS training. In addition, you will complete three-weeks of clinical training in intermediate care and four-weeks of clinical training in an extended care facility to gain hands-on experience in the field.

As a graduate of the Resident Care Attendant program, you will be prepared to care for clients with special needs and to function collaboratively as members of a multidisciplinary health care team. You will be qualified for a range of positions, including Long-Term Care Aide (geriatric), Home Healthcare Worker, Residential Care Attendant or Nursing Aid.
