Community Health Care

The Community Health Care diploma program is an intensive program designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in care-giving. You'll learn residential care for clients living with chronic conditions or mental health issues. You'll also study behavior management, non-violent crisis intervention techniques, developmental disorders and basic special education principles. Recreational therapy and activity program planning will also be covered.

As a Community Health Care student, you will also be trained in Standard First Aid and CPR. WHMIS and BC FoodSafe training is also provided. Seven weeks of practicum will allow you to combine theory and practice. You will gain hands-on experience in a three-week practicum in the community and a four-week practicum in a long-term care facility.

As a graduate of the CHC program, you will be prepared to function collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team. Career opportunities include Long-Term Care Aide, Home Support Health Care worker, Resident Care Attendant, Nurse's Aide and Special Needs Assistant.

Practical Nursing

Nurses continue to be in high demand in BC and across the country. If you want a rewarding career in health care that offers both diversity and many opportunities for growth, the Practical Nursing program at Vancouver Career College is for you.

As a Practical Nursing student, you will learn to provide nursing care in collaboration with other health care professionals. You will focus on developing the essential competencies for a Practical Nurse as established by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia and gain the skills needed to care for patients in medical, surgical or rehabilitation wards of acute care hospitals. In addition, the Nursing Arts courses and the 3 practicum placements will give you ample opportunity to put theory into practice. By the end of your preceptorship component, you will have learned to provide holistic nursing interventions to patients and have gained the relevant clinical experience to meet professional practice competencies and standards. As a PN graduate, you will be prepared to join the health care team in medical, surgical and rehabilitation wards of acute care hospitals. You may also find employment in the long-term care settings, group homes, public schools, special care units and home care.

Resident Care Attendant

Are you a compassionate and caring person? Do you want to help others? If you want to establish a career that incorporates these qualities, you should enroll in the Resident Care Attendant program at Vancouver Career College.

In the Resident Care Attendant program, you will study anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. You will learn about chronic medical conditions, interpersonal relations and communications, as well as human growth and development. You will also gain a solid foundation in specific areas such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia, death and dying, and patient support networks. You will receive certification in First Aid, CPR, BC FoodSafe, and WHMIS training. In addition, you will complete three-weeks of clinical training in intermediate care and four-weeks of clinical training in an extended care facility to gain hands-on experience in the field.

As a graduate of the Resident Care Attendant program, you will be prepared to care for clients with special needs and to function collaboratively as members of a multidisciplinary health care team. You will be qualified for a range of positions, including Long-Term Care Aide (geriatric), Home Healthcare Worker, Residential Care Attendant or Nursing Aid.

Veterinary Office Management

Do you love animals so much that you want to make caring for them part of your career? The Veterinary Office Management program at Vancouver Career College will teach you to combine your love of animals with the business and organizational skills to launch a rewarding career.

In the Veterinary Office Management program, you will learn the business, management and organizational skills necessary to run the front office of a veterinary practice. You will learn about animal breeds, medical terminology, animal health practice, pre- and post- surgical care, nutrition and diet, vaccines, parasites, pharmacology and common surgeries. You will also learn to assess and prioritize client appointment requests and respond to clients' basic questions about general animal health care. In addition, you will learn the industry-standard computer applications, accounting and management fundamentals.

Upon graduation, you will be prepared to begin a career in veterinary office reception, administration or management and can work in veterinary clinics, hospitals, animal daycares, animal welfare organizations, wildlife shelters, zoos, aquariums, laboratories, breeding kennels and boarding facilities.
