A massage therapist uses manual therapeutic techniques to treat
soft tissues (such as muscle) that have been affected by stress,
injury and illness. The primary goal of massage therapy is to
loosen and relax muscles and their surrounding connective tissue
coverings, and relieve the painful muscle tension that inevitably
erodes your energy level.
Massage therapists are usually trained in a variety of
techniques, the most common being Swedish massage, hydrotherapy,
sports massage, deep tissue, chair massage, reflexology,
aromatherapy, lymphatic drainage and spa treatments. Some
practitioners do focus on a particular technique.
Massage therapists practice in a variety of settings, such as
private offices or massage therapy clinics, chiropractors' or
doctors' offices, with sports teams, or at athletic clubs,
resorts, spas, yoga retreat centers, golf courses, beauty salons,
dance studios and cruise ships.
Diploma - Medical Assistant
Medical assistants like spending time with patients, but they're
also capable of carrying out important office-type tasks. Change
is constant, so they have to be comfortable doing different
things each day. They also get along with people easily.
Medical assistants perform routine administrative and clinical
tasks in the offices and clinics of physicians, podiatrists,
chiropractors and optometrists. In small practices, they are
"generalists," who handle both administrative and clinical duties
and report directly to an office manager, physician,or other
health practitioner. Those in large practices tend to specialize
in a particular area under the supervision of department
administrators.
Diploma - Medical Billing & Coding
A medical billing and coding professional is one who likes the
medical field, but prefers to work not with patients, but with
patients' data.
Medical billing and coding specialists assemble patient info by
first making sure their medical charts are complete. They ensure
that all forms are completed, and that all necessary information
is in the computer, and may communicate with physicians to get
more information. They also use computers to tabulate and analyze
data to help improve patient care, control costs, for use in
legal actions, in response to surveys or for use in research.
This type of individual is responsible, organized and can retain
large amounts of information. They multi-task well, enjoy reading
and like to use the computer.
Diploma - Surgical Technologist
Surgical technologists are comfortable around blood, and
comfortable watching people being operated on.
Before an operation, surgical technologists help prepare the
operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment,
sterile drapes and sterile solutions. They assemble both sterile
and non-sterile equipment, as well as adjust and check it to
ensure it is working properly.
Technologists also get patients ready for surgery by washing,
shaving and disinfecting incision sites. They transport patients
to the operating room, help position them on the operating table,
and cover them with sterile surgical drapes. Technologists also
observe patients' vital signs, check charts, and assist the
surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
During surgery, technologists pass instruments and supplies to
surgeons and surgeon assistants. They may hold retractors, cut
sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies and
instruments. Surgical technologists help prepare, care for and
dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and help apply
dressings. Some operate sterilizers, lights or suction machines,
and help operate diagnostic equipment.
A surgical technologist is comfortable in intense environments,
works well with their hands, and is very interested in the human
body.
