Brandon Campus

The Brandon campus of Florida Career College offers large, comfortable classrooms, computer labs with PC and Mac computers, Medical Labs, bookstore and a resource center. The resource center provides students and faculty with reference materials, including books, videos and periodicals to supplement textbooks and lectures. Also, each campus houses school offices for student services, financial services, and career center.

The Brandon campus is located at 2662 South Falkenburg Rd, Brandon, Florida. The 12,000 square-foot facility is conveniently located off of the Crosstown Expressway, and Interstates 4 & 75.

Upon completion, the graduate will possess a working knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, human diseases, pharmacology, basic medical office procedures and clinical medical assisting skills. Students will learn front office procedures such as handling patient accounts and records, word processing, and scheduling of patients. The students will also learn back office procedures such as taking patient histories and vital signs, preparing patients for procedures, assisting the physician with examinations and treatments, and performing selected diagnostic tests as directed by the physician. The medical assistant technician will also learn basic medical laboratory and X-ray procedures.

Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the location and size of the practice and the practitioner's specialty. In small practices, medical assistants usually do many different kinds of tasks, handling both administrative and clinical duties and reporting directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area, under the supervision of department administrators.

The program includes courses in medical documentation, translating this into numerical codes, and assigning and sequencing diagnostic and procedural codes using universally recognized coding systems.

Most health care facilities need qualified medical coding and billing specialists to accurately bill patients for treatment. This program prepares students for entry level employment as medical coding and billing specialists in doctors' offices, hospitals and any type of organization that houses medical records.

Students will also learn front office procedures such as handling patient accounts and records, word processing, and scheduling of patients.

Medical Office Administrator
Associate's Degree Program

Medical Office Administrators keep health care offices running efficiently. They perform highly specialized work requiring knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. Duties vary from office to office, and Medical Office Administrators may assist physicians and medical scientists with reports, record simple medical histories, arrange for patients to be hospitalized, and order supplies. They must also be familiar with insurance rules, billing practices, and hospital or laboratory procedures.

Providing the training and skills that are necessary to become a Patient Care Technician, this program focuses on essential skill building that includes courses in occupational therapy, radiology and geriatric skills. Students are also given detailed instruction in other important aspects of advanced home health care such as CPR training, body system structure and function, and HIV/AIDS awareness. Graduates can find employment in a variety of settings that include hospitals, medical offices, living facilities and much more. Graduates are qualified to take the Florida Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and Home Health Aide (HHA) certification exams and the National Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) examination. Exams must be passed before certifications are awarded.
