Philadelphia University
M.S. in Disaster medicine and Management
Addressing Local, National and Global Needs Through Education
and Research
Recent events in our nation and the world have focused attention
on natural disasters, mass-casualty events and public-service
disruptions resulting from terrorist threats, biological and
chemical terrorism, war, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes,
floods, wildfires, volcano activity and major power-grid
disruptions. Additionally, society faces an increasing number of
accidents involving hazardous materials. All of these situations
cause immense hardship to people, animals, the environment,
physical structures and our public infrastructure. They have also
served to shine new light on the problems of disaster
preparedness by public safety and emergency-medical services
(EMS) and public-health systems.
The need for a highly organized disaster-preparedness
infrastructure and individuals with expertise in this area is now
readily apparent to the government and private sector, with
disaster emergency planning and management becoming an expanding
area of study in medicine, emergency-medical services, public
safety, mental health, public health and the military. There is a
5-day on-site required for this program.
