Mountain State University

Mountain State University founded in 1933, is an independent, not-for-profit university offering traditional classroom-based education as well as independent study and online learning programs. MSU academic programs span a wide range of fields, but they’re all focused on preparing students for success. This means professional studies that meet current and future employment needs. It also means skills that build both long-term career growth and personal satisfaction.

Medical Assisting - Associate of Science (Online)

The medical assisting program comprises general studies in the humanities, business, and the natural sciences along with preparation for clinical and administrative health care positions. Medical assistant positions often include such tasks as:

  • Reception
  • Appointment scheduling
  • Medical coding and transcribing
  • Computer use
  • Taking patient histories
  • Taking and recording vital signs
  • Medication administration
  • Assisting the physician with minor procedures
  • Venipuncture and giving injections

Graduates are then eligible to sit for the Certified Medical Assisting exam, a national test which, when passed, gives the medical assistant the privilege of including the credential CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) behind their name.

The medical assisting program is accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). To ensure that the program teaches current and relevant skills, it follows the objectives outlined in the American Association of Medical Assistants Role Delineation Study. Mountain State University’s Medical Assisting program was the first to be accredited in West Virginia.

Mountain State University requires applicants to have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate for admission.
