Medical Assistant - Diploma

Medical assistants perform both administrative and clinical duties, reporting directly to an office manager, physician or other health practitioner.

Your training will focus on examining room procedures, obtaining vital signs and medical histories, performing routine laboratory procedures, sterilizing and maintaining equipment, and the proper techniques for administering medications as directed by the physician. You'll also learn to handle administrative duties.

In addition to training from instructors with real-world experience, you will also complete an externship in a physician's office, clinic or related health care facility under the supervision of a physician, nurse or health services professional.

You'll learn the fundamentals of medical office protocol and get specialized training in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Health Care Financing Administration Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS).

Do you want a career in which you can help people feel better while improving your own job outlook? Then the exciting new Pharmacy Technician program at Virginia College could be perfect for you.

Pharmacy technicians work with licensed pharmacists, helping with patient consultations, counter dispensing operations and prescription preparation. You may work in a retail pharmacy, stocking and keeping inventory of prescriptive and over-the-counter medications. You might also maintain patient medication records, count or pour medications into dispensing containers and manage the cash register.

In hospitals, you could perform many of the same duties but have other responsibilities, including assembling medications for each patient, repackaging medications, preparing commercially-unavailable medications and delivering medications to patient rooms.

You will learn the skills it takes to offer professional, technical support to veterinarians. Train to assist veterinarians with the care and treatment of animals as well as office management skills and patient care. A highlight of the program is the externship where you will have the opportunity to work with a veterinarian, applying classroom skills and fundamentals at the job site. Once you have completed this program, you will be qualified to work in humane societies, animal control facilities, veterinary clinics, and diagnostic laboratories.
