The objective of the Associate Degree in Applied Science in
Allied Health is to prepare an individual to enter the medical
field in the capacity of medical assistant, medical office
manager, or medical secretary. Other opportunities exist in the
hospital setting as a patient care technician, EKG technician,
unit secretary, or ward clerk. Graduates of this program will be
eligible to sit for the following certifications*: Registered
Medical Assistant (RMA), administered by the American Medical
Technologists (AMT); National Certified EKG Technician (NCET),
and National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT), administered
by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

The objective of the Associate Degree in Applied Science in
Cardiovascular Sonography is to prepare the student to enter the
medical field in the capacity of non-invasive vascular or
cardiovascular technician. The program also includes instruction
leading to the development of clinical skills required for
positions such as medical assistant, EKG technician and patient
care technician. Graduates of this program will be eligible to
sit for the following certifications/registries*: National
Certified ECG Technician (NCET), and National Certified
Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT), administered by the National Center
for Competency Testing (NCCT); Cardiovascular Science exam and
Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) credential offered by
the Cardiovascular Credentialing Institute (CCI); Registered
Cardiac Sonography (RCS) with CCI upon completion of an optional
ultrasound externship including 800 hours in a non-invasive
echocardiography lab; Registered Vascular Sonography (RVS) with
CCI upon completion of an optional ultrasound externship
including 800 hours in a non-invasive vascular lab.

The medical assisting field is one of the fastest-growing
industries in today's economy. HoHoKus School's Medical Assistant
program will prepare students for entry-level positions as
Medical Assistants, Medical Office Managers, Medical Secretaries,
Medical Receptionists or Medical Transcriptionists. Other
opportunities exist in the hospital setting as Patient Care
Technicians, EKG Technicians, Phlebotomists, Unit Secretaries and
Ward Clerks.
Students learn both the "back-office" clinical and "front-office"
administrative skills that today's medical profession demands.
The program is an intensive 9-month (day classes) or 11
˝-month (night classes) course that emphasizes the
following areas:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Clinical Laboratories
- Medical Laboratories
- Medical Terminology
- Patient Relations/Emergency Care Procedures
- Medical Office Practices and Management
- Medical Transcription
- Computerized Medical Management
- Word Processing with Windows software
Keyboarding students will develop clinical skills such as vital
signs, venipuncture, charting, EKG, blood testing, injections,
urinalysis, hospital care, CPR and First Aid. Students will gain
administrative skills such as computer proficiency with Microsoft
Windows software, patient billing, scheduling, record keeping,
medical transcription, keyboarding speed and accuracy, insurance
forms and coding.
Upon successful completion of the program, students will have
obtained CPR, First Aid, and OSHA certifications. In addition,
completion of this program allows graduates to gain
Electrocardiography (EKG) and Phlebotomy certifications and sit
for the RMA exam to become Registered Medical Assistants.
Medical Billing and Coding Specialist - Certificate (Day /

The objective of the Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
program is to prepare the student with no prior experience to
develop the skills to become a medical records technician,
medical record abstractor, medical biller, insurance claim
administrator or coding specialist. The optional 1-month
externship allows additional career inroads for those whose
ultimate goal is medical coding.

The objective of the Associate Degree in Applied Science in
Surgical Technology is to prepare students with the knowledge and
skills they need to pursue entry-level positions as surgical
assistants or infection control technicians in the hospital
setting. Considering job opportunities in the office/outpatient
setting, which may require additional clinical and administrative
skills, our program includes core medical assisting competencies
required for positions such as medical assistant, EKG technician
and patient care technician. Graduates of this program will be
eligible to sit for the following certifications*: Tech in
Surgery – Certified (TS-C [NCCT]), National Certified ECG
Technician (NCET), and National Certified Phlebotomy Technician
(NCPT) administered by the National Center for Competency Testing
(NCCT).
