New York Medical College - School of Health Sciences and Practice and Institute of Public Health

New York Medical College, one of the nation's largest private health sciences universities, offers advanced degree students a breadth of learning opportunities and experiences that is unparalleled in the nation. The School of Health Sciences and Practice and Institute of Public Health provides students with the following:

A Wide Range of Accredited Graduate Programs

The School of Health Sciences and Practice and Institute of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The school offers the 46-credit Master of Public Health (MPH) in 3 disciplines and 5 graduate certificates, a dual degree (MD/MPH), the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Epidemiology and DrPH in Health Policy and Management, a nationally recognized Doctor of Physical Therapy, and medically-oriented Speech-Language Pathology Master of Science.

Accommodating Class Schedules and Locations

A large majority of our 500 students are part-time. Only our physical therapy and speech-language pathology programs are full-time, day programs. On-campus classes for the MPH degree program, as well graduate certificate programs, are offered in the late afternoons and evenings and on weekends. A number of courses such as the MPH in Health Policy and Management and graduate certificate in Emergency Preparedness are offered online.

A Student Body of Health Care Professionals

Many of our students are physicians, nurses and other clinicians, health administrators, analysts and researchers. They work in public health departments, hospitals and other health care organizations, private practices, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, community and government agencies, and insurance companies.

Collaboration with the Community

Our collaborative efforts with the county health departments in this region and with other county and community organizations continue to grow with special focus on immigrant health issues and emergency public health preparedness. A Center for Disaster Medicine has been established within the School of Health Sciences and Practice and Institute of Public Health. As the sole school of public health within the Hudson Valley, we have an important educational leadership responsibility within our region, and we take this responsibility seriously.

Behavioral Sciences and Health Promotion - MPH

The MPH in Behavioral Sciences and Health Promotion includes core courses such as Health Care in the US, Health Economics, and Biostatistics and Epidemiology as well as required program courses in Principles and Techniques of Behavior Change, Biopsychosocial Aspects of Health and Illness, Fundamentals of Research Methodology, and Stress and Health.

The 27-credit Graduate Certificate in Health Education is designed around the competencies necessary for qualification as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), and establishes a basis for eligibility to take the CHES examination. The program facilitates an understanding of the basics of public health education and develops the concepts and skills required for carrying out effective health education programs. It prepares graduates to take leadership positions in health promotion and disease prevention programs in voluntary health agencies, hospitals and health care organizations, schools, businesses, governmental agencies and community outreach organizations. The certificate may be applied toward an MPH degree in Behavioral Science and Health Promotion.
