Steps to Success
Spencerian College offers education only for careers that are in demand. You can pursue a certificate, diploma, or associate degree in a variety of fields of study including Health Sciences, Business, Graphic Design, Computer Aided Design, and others. All of our programs are taught in quarters for more flexibility, with day and evening sessions.
Spencerian College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to award certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees.
The purpose of the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Administrative Management program is to prepare graduates to be multi-skilled health professionals who perform administrative, clinical, and management duties in a physician's office, clinic or other type of health care facility. Students are trained first and foremost as medical assistants with additional emphasis on management skills.
They may manage both routine and emergency situations, along with overseeing the staff and facilities. Course work in office and human resource management will aid in professional growth and ability to assume a leadership role.
The objectives of the Clinical Assistant Diploma program are to prepare students to perform quality clinical skills in a medical office or clinic.
Graduates of this program will be able to demonstrate safe practices in the performance of clinical procedures required by physicians, including CPR and First Aid. Also, these graduates will be taught to accurately perform medical laboratory tests and procedures, including electrocardiograms. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for certification through the American Medical Technologist (AMT) as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Clinical Assistant graduates typically work in physicians' offices or clinics. Earnings in individual health care occupations vary as widely as the duties. We recommend that prospective students refer to local health care employers for earning potential in their region.*
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant program will prepare students to fill a vital role in the clinical laboratory setting.* Students will be able to perform duties in the laboratory or donor services field that are above the complexity level of a phlebotomist but not yet to the level of a medical laboratory technician. This program will provide an opportunity for students who excel in phlebotomy to further their education.
Health Unit Coordinators work at the nurses' station in health care facilities, coordinating the non-clinical activities, clerical, and support functions related to patient care. Duties include transcribing physicians' orders, scheduling diagnostic tests and treatments for patients, managing the patients' charts, and maintaining unit supplies.
The objectives of the Health Care Reimbursement Specialist program are to prepare students to become medical coders, review rejected medical claims, and prepare them for resubmission. Students also gain knowledge of health care compliance issues. This program prepares students for future certification with various professional organizations. Graduates possess the skills necessary for employment in physicians' practices, clinics, insurance companies, consulting firms, and medical billing companies.*
Health Care Reimbursement Specialist graduates typically works at physician practices, clinics, insurance companies, consulting firms, medical billing companies, and hospitals. Once established, graduates of this program can do individual consulting.
The Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist is a highly specialized and knowledgeable health care professional who is educated and trained to perform diagnostic procedures at the request of the physician to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with cardiac disease.
Graduates of the Invasive Cardiovascular Technology program will be eligible to take the National Credentialing Examination (RCIS). Depending upon background, students will also be required to sit for the Basic Science Examination administered by CCI (Cardiovascular Credentialing International).
The objectives of the Limited Medical Radiography Diploma program are to prepare students to perform x-ray (radiographic) examinations in clinics, physicians' offices, dentists' offices, public health institutions, and urgent care centers. Students will be able to prepare patients for radiographic examinations by explaining the procedure, by ensuring proper positioning of both the patient and the radiographic equipment. Graduates of this program are required to take Kentucky State Limited Radiography exam through the Radiation Health Branch.
The LMR program is not the Radiologic Technology program. Each program is distinctly different and offers different career opportunities.
Limited Medical Radiography graduates typically work at clinics, physicians' offices, dentists' offices, public health institutions, and urgent care centers.*
The objectives of the Medical Administrative Management program are to prepare students to be multi-skilled professionals able to perform administrative, clinical, and managerial duties in a physician's office, clinic or other type of health care facility.*
Graduates of this program will possess the skills necessary to manage both routine and emergency situations along with overseeing staff and facilities. Coursework in office and human resource management will aid in professional growth and in ability to assume a leadership role. Duties will include: office management, performing diagnostic tests, and assisting the doctor with special procedures.

Medical Assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties. The practice of medical assisting directly influences the public's health and well-being, and requires mastery of a complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.
The Medical Assistant Diploma program at Spencerian College Lexington Campus is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.CAAHEP.org) upon the recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowment (CRB-AAMAE), thus allowing graduates to sit for the national certification exam (CMA(AAMA)).
Graduates of the Spencerian College Medical Assistant program are qualified to take the Certified Medical Assistant exam of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). This certification is a further indication of the student's skills and professional abilities.

The objective of the Medical Clinical Specialties program is to prepare students to perform clinically in a physician's office or other medical facility. The graduate possesses the skills necessary to obtain quality laboratory specimens, perform x-rays, handle administrative duties, assist in patient care and examinations, as well as perform appropriate medical procedures.
Externships prepare the student to perform the roles of medical assistant, phlebotomist, and limited medical radiographer, offering the graduate many avenues to pursue in finding employment in the medical community.*
The objectives of the Medical Coding Specialist Diploma program are to prepare the student to analyze medical records and abstract data for the purpose of billing and insurance reimbursement.

Graduates possess the skills necessary for employment in doctors' offices, clinics, hospitals, insurance companies, and medical billing agencies. This program prepares the student for future certification with various professional organizations.

The objectives of the Medical Transcription Diploma program are to prepare the student to transcribe medical records in a variety of medical settings.* Students will learn how to accurately transcribe physicians' reports.
The purpose of the Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate program is to prepare students to perform the specialized skills needed for employment in ophthalmology and/or optometric physician offices. Students will be trained in the various administrative and clinical duties performed by an entry level Ophthalmic Assistant in an eye care medical setting.
The objectives of the Phlebotomy Certificate program are to prepare students with the skills necessary to obtain quality laboratory specimens in variety of medical settings. Students will gain the technical knowledge and learn the skills required to pass the certification exam and become an important member of the health care team. Phlebotomy graduates work at various health care facilities including hospitals, clinics, and physician offices.* In addition, they may work in reference laboratories, research facilities, and community blood centers.
A student of this comprehensive and interesting program will learn the aspects of professional nursing. In addition, you will gain on-the-job experience in the clinical phases of nursing. This is done in a variety of hospitals and healthcare facilities under the supervision of qualified nursing faculty. This program is offered in both the day and evening divisions. Graduates of Spencerian's Practical Nursing program have had an outstanding employment success rate.
The mission of Spencerian College Radiologic Technology program is to provide students the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of an entry-level Radiologic Technologist through a progressive academic and clinical educational environment. The goals for the radiography program are to validate clinical competency, and develop critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills to effectively meet the needs of our students and community. Program faculty encourages lifelong learning and professional development through participation in Spencerian's radiography student organization and local professional society, as well as attendance at the Radiography Program Advisory Board meeting.
Students will be instructed on the proper administration of ionizing radiation for the purpose of medical diagnosis with an emphasis on radiation protection to ensure quality patient care. The curriculum includes both theory and competency-based instruction. Various curricula resources are utilized in the development of the program curriculum – ASRT Radiography Curriculum (www.asrt.org; curricula); ARRT Radiography didactic and clinical competency requirements (www.arrt.com; Education/CE; Primary Certification; Competency Reqs) and Content Specifications for Radiography Exam (www.arrt.com; Examinations/Content Specs). The Radiologic technology didactic and clinical classes are held during the day with the exception of occasional evening clinical rotations.
The program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) through the JRCERT Standards for an Accredited Educational Program in Radiological Sciences (Standards).

Many factors play a role in determining the graduate's potential earnings, including years of experience, amount of responsibility required, and the size of the facility or practice of employment. Other factors that impact earnings vary from region to region, such as cost-of-living. Many areas are experiencing shortages in health care workers. This is having a major impact on earnings.
Students gain knowledge and experience with septic technique, and preparation and use of instruments and supplies to be used in surgery during surgical procedures. The surgical technologist performs scrub and/or circulating duties including passing instruments and supplies to the surgical team members. Preparing and positioning the patient, operating equipment, and assisting the anesthesiologist, and keeping accurate records.
The objective of the AAS Surgical Technology program is to utilize learning experiences in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains to prepare students for entry-level employment positions and then future advancement in today's surgical technology profession. The associate degree program offers both didactic and clinical training in advanced and future trends in surgical technology. In addition, biomedical sciences, laser surgery, and the impact of technological advances will be addressed. The program stresses the importance of academic knowledge, professional accountability, independent decision-making, and the critical nature of self-assessment.
