At Brown Mackie College, you don’t need to wait for a traditional “Fall Start.” Because our students aren’t always living “traditional” lives we offer new starts each month with day or evening classes that fit your schedule. Each class lasts one month. There’s no need to divide your time and energy between coursework and exams for multiple courses. Brown Mackie College — Merrillville is conveniently located in the Twin Towers business complex of Merrillville, just west of the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Interstate 65. Merrillville is part of the Gary, Indiana, metropolitan area and is only 40 miles from Chicago, and within a few hours' drive of Indianapolis, Toledo, and Detroit. The town is centered around the intersection of US 30 and Interstate 65, helping to connect Merrillville to these large metropolitan areas.
Merrillville is a hub for retail trade in northwest Indiana. The US 30 corridor between Taft Street and Colorado Street harbors a large concentration of big-box retailers, hotels, restaurants, and automobile dealerships. Westfield Southlake, one of the largest shopping malls in Indiana, is located in this area. Ameriplex at the Crossroads, an industrial and technology park, opened at Broadway between 93rd Avenue and 101st Avenue in 2005. The development is designated as an Indiana Certified Technology Park. Associate's - Medical Assisting
The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting program prepares graduates to work under the direction of physicians in a private practice or medical setting. Students develop a solid foundation in communication and problem-solving skills through general education course work.
A diploma program is also available in medical assisting.
Associate's - Medical Office Management
The program in medical office management is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in an insurance coding and billing department of a physician's office, clinic or hospital.
Graduates may perform clerical and administrative tasks, analyze information, and combine that with knowledge of insurance reimbursement and coding guidelines to expedite physician payments.
Associate's - Occupational Therapy Assistant
The Occupational Therapy Assistant program prepares graduates for entry-level employment, working under the direction of an occupational therapist. Students are trained to administer occupational therapy treatments to individuals who have lost functional abilities due to illness, injury, or disease. Coursework combines lecture, laboratory, and clinical experiences. General Education elements of the program enhance students' communication and problem-solving skills to enhance their effectiveness in the occupational therapy profession.
The program prepares the graduate for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Certification Examination for Occupational Therapy Assistants. Associate's - Surgical Technology
The Associate of Science degree program in Surgical Technology is designed to provide students with the required knowledge base and technical skills required to obtain entry-level employment in the field of surgical technology.
To achieve this goal, the program curriculum provides study in:
- General and specialty surgical procedures
- Principles of anesthesia
- Anatomy and physiology
- Medical terminology
- Surgical technology techniques
Additional course work in general education helps students to grow professionally and develop the ability to assume leadership roles.

Bachelor's - Health Care Management
The Bachelor's in Health Care Management is designed to accommodate the needs and interests of students from a variety of backgrounds. Courses provide a solid foundation for varied health care careers. The program also incorporates an externship that offers students real-world experience within health care facilities that may include hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory care facilities, physician practices, and pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies.
Certificate - Medical Assistant
The medical assistant program provides graduates with the skills necessary to obtain entry-level employment in a clinical and/or administrative medical setting. The program prepares graduates for entry-level positions under the direct supervision of a physician or medical office manager through course work in:
