Requirements for Becoming Licensed
Getting your occupational therapist license is key to starting a successful career in this field.
While licensure requirements vary from state to state, you will find regulations for professional occupational therapists exist in all 50 states including the District of Columbia.
Common requirements for licensure include:
- Graduating from an accredited occupational therapy school
- Meeting occupational therapy fieldwork requirements
- Passing the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam
- Submitting an application for licensure and paying associated fees
Taking the NBCOT Exam
In order to ensure that practicing occupational therapists meet the high standards necessary to help clients, the NBCOT oversees the certification process for professional occupational therapists. The mission of the NBCOT is to "provide a world-class standard for certification of occupational therapy practitioners." Passing the exam is an important part of obtaining the necessary credentials to qualify for occupational therapist jobs.
Successful completion of the NBCOT exam results in the title of registered occupational therapist (OTR).
