Bouncing back from a job loss takes time and resilience. To make it easier to find a new job in the health care field, many jump at the opportunity to go back to school and acquire new skills.

Laid-off workers thinking about a career change or enhancing their skills should know about a new resource for funding their medical assistant training.

U.S. News & World Report indicates that a number of colleges are creating scholarships to help laid-off workers pay their tuition. The unemployed can find scholarships at certain schools that can reduce their college costs—or, in some cases, bring them down to zero.

This provides hope to those recovering from a job loss, and can help health care students pay for training as a medical assistant, or in other allied health fields, such as medical coding or medical transcription.

In states like Illinois and Ohio, laid-off workers will find colleges that waive tuition for specific courses and career training. Missouri State University will waive nearly half of its semester fees for laid-off students who enroll full-time. And Western Governors University is offering scholarships to cover one-third of the tuition for new students who are recently unemployed.

These are just some of the examples of the colleges offering laid-off workers a chance to go back to school for free—or for a reduced cost. Of course, the federal government is also helping with its college financial aid, from student loans to grants and scholarships for health care students.

At Opportunity.gov, laid-off workers will find information about federal grants and scholarships aimed specifically at the unemployed. Because this money does not have to be repaid, those who qualify will be able to sign up for classes at a significantly reduced cost, or may have the advantage of re-entering the job market debt-free.
