Health care reform stories are everywhere these days. But separating fact from fiction isn't always easy. CBS News reports that a complicated issue like health care often falls prey to distortions that leave people wondering what to believe.

And people in the field are paying close attention to the debate: medical assistants, and those who work in other allied health fields will be affected by any changes.

Considering the current state of health care, CBS News lists the top myths surrounding the health care debate. Topics that have been in the headlines include the notion of rationed health care, the belief that the new bill would cut Medicare benefits, and the hope that health care legislation would bring overnight change.

In town halls and press conferences, President Obama has refuted these claims. He has emphasized that accessibility to quality care for all Americans is the most important part of his reform proposal, with the elimination of wasteful spending—but not existing benefits. Of course, skepticism remains until we get the final bill, either proving or disproving all previous claims.

Another top myth about health care is that Americans don't want a public option. In July 2009, a CBS/New York Times poll showed that 66 percent of Americans favor a government health insurance plan to compete with private health insurance companies. Among those polled, only 27 percent said they oppose the public option.

Whatever happens will have an impact on job opportunities for medical assistants, medical coders, and those with medical transcription training.

The debates have been heating up as summer 2009 winds to a close. While myths continue to have their day in the sun, Americans await the final shape that health care reform will take when the debate is over and it's time for action to address this issue.
