Tough economic times have taken their toll across many professions, and dentistry is no exception. The American Dental Association (ADA) finds that specialists such as orthodontists and cosmetic dentists, in particular, have seen a drop in patients as more families are postponing this kind of work during the recession.

Dentists may be cutting back in order to get through the downturn. But current and aspiring dental hygienists can take advantage of the slow economy by going back to school to earn their degree or advance their skills. According to the July 2009 issue of Access, a magazine produced by the American Dental Hygienist Association (ADHA), more practitioners are considering a return to dental hygienist school to help expand their career opportunities.

The magazine also highlights an extensive list of dental hygienists who have turned to unique job opportunities in order to broaden their experience and stay working. Along with working in private practices, dental hygienists can find opportunities in teaching, emergency response work, school-based clinics, hospital dentistry and public health.

If a career as a dental hygienist is in your future, now is the perfect time to start dental hygienist school. With a degree in dental hygiene, you can help bring compassionate care to an environment that so many patients dread—and one that is absolutely critical to overall health.
